What past participants have said:

"In this project I enjoyed making the dress and also the fashion show we did afterwards. I think the whole project was excellent.",
(Joanne Adamu, Student at Our Ladys' Convent High School)

"I wanted to become a fashion designer before the experience, but now I want to be one even more." (Sarah Leigh Hylett, Student at Stoke Newington School)

"I would recommend this project to other young people because if they've got a talent this is a good place to start. You can show people what you can do. Also, it is good if you want to grow up and become something"
(Eva Batrane, Student at Clapton Girls Technology College)

"Fashion is a tough business. Don't be upset if you do not achieve something you set out to achieve, as you can make something even better."
(Chenelle Ansah, Student at Hackney Free and Parochial School)

Fashion Workshops for
Young People

London College of Fashion and Fashion Awareness Direct will be running two courses for young people at Hackney schools and colleges in July 2004 with a taster day in March.

The workshops will start with a taster day on Wednesday March 24th. 9.30am - 3.30pm

The morning session will introduce students to current fashion trends. They will then choose a theme from a range of options and create a professional style mood board of colours textures and images. In the afternoon practising fashion designers will be on hand to meet Year 10 students, show examples of their work and discuss their professional experience. Year 11 students will be given an introductory session on machine skills in a simulated industry workshop. At the end of the day both groups of students will leave with a copy of their mood boards, which will form the starting point of the summer workshop.

The week-long fashion experience will take place July 12th-16th, 9.30am – 3.30pm

Course 1 will focus on initiating Year 10 students into the whole process of fashion design from initial research through to a completed product. Workshops will include visual research as inspiration, design development, printed textiles and draping on the stand. Students will learn how to construct a bag from a pattern, which will then be styled and displayed in the final day catwalk show.

Course 2 will target students who have attended previous Fashion Awareness Direct workshops and students studying fashion/textiles This follow up course will focus on more advanced methods of fashion manufacture. Using their mood board research as inspiration students will customise a t-shirt and create a summer outfit for the catwalk show.

Both groups of students will also be taken on a visit to the Fashion & Textile Museum in Bermondsey. At the end of the course participants will have built a complete portfolio reflecting the design process and will receive guidance on how to transfer these skills to application for entry into fashion colleges.

All students will be expected to attend a taster day on March 24th. These workshops are targeted at Year 10 and Year 11 students from Hackney Schools. Art, Design and Textile teachers at local schools and colleges will accompanying them. After previous workshops, teachers have commented on how the students who have participated in the workshops are noticeably more advanced than their peers thanks to the motivation and skills gained through the project.

The workshops are ideal for adults from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures seeking to find out more about the structure of fashion colleges and fashion processes in the UK.

The courses are funded by the Learning Skills Council London East and the Enterprise Pathfinder and are supported by the Learning Trust.
