FAD winners get the low-down
at ASDA Label George

Last September 17-year-old Annie Skipper won the FAD Fashion
Futures 2 competition to make a little Black Dress to be
sold by George at ASDA. The second part of Annie's prize
was a a two-week work placement with ASDA’s fashion
design label George. Alexandra Achilles, who received a
special mention for creativity at FF2 went along too.
During their placement the girls worked with three designers
for ASDA’s label George, who specialize in ranges
for women’s high fashion from the catwalk that gets
a fast turnaround in stores, and G12, a range for teenagers.

FAD caught up with Annie and Alexandra to ask how it
went…
“The design side paralleled with what we had done
with FAD” says Annie. “We spent time putting
together moodboards and colour swatches, and surfing ASDA’s
online resources to find images they had pulled off at last
summer’s catwalks to predict this season’s high-street
trends. Now when I look at the clothes on the High Street
I see that all the designers’ predictions have come
true.”

“We learnt a lot about the industry,” says Alexandra.
“The designers gave us advice on how to get into designing,
the different courses available and also on universities,
as well as the ASDA apprenticeship scheme.”
For Annie the highlight of the placement was a visit to
ASDA’s Lutterworth branch for the presentations for
upcoming fashion collections. “This was a meeting
with the entire ladies and womenswear branch. We were looking
at prints and patterns and predictions of what would be
in fashion next year. It was really inspirational to see
it all come together.”

Now both Annie and Alexandra are in their last year of A-Levels
at school and will be applying for foundation courses next
Autumn. Both say the placement helped clarify their ideas
for their future:” I now know I would like to do something
in design,” says Annie “Not necessarily fashion
but something where I can draw on my own inspiration for
the final product.” Alexandra says: “The placement
made me want to go into designing on my own rather than
working for a company. What the placement taught me was
how to observe future trends.”
