In the third workshop of the Fashion Futures series, students continued to build their portfolio of essential fashion skills with sessions on sewing skills and garment design.
In last week’s pattern cutting activity, we transformed a half scale dress block into a working paper pattern. This week, we were in the machine room, cutting out the pattern in calico, and sewing it into a mini garment, using industrial equipment to stitch and press seams, darts and hems.
In the design studio, students reviewed the concepts they’d developed in their sketchbooks and mood boards, then used divergent thinking exercises to generate a wide range of initial ideas for garment designs. Over the next week they’ll be evaluating and developing their designs, ready to finalise the final version next week.
