Fashion Futures 2012, graduating from BA (Hons) Fashion Menswear, Central St Martins

Having just been selected for inclusion in the Central Saint Martins press show, Randa Kherba is a menswear designer who took part in FAD Fashion Futures in 2012. ‘It’s been stressful but I’ve loved every minute of it,’ Randa says, discussing her time at CSM. ‘As soon as you walk into the building it’s like a different world. Everywhere you walk there are people working and it really does motivate you. Everybody has the same drive to push their work, and being surrounded by that energy helps.’
Having created a final collection inspired by a week-long extreme sports festival she found in Alaska, Randa’s work is focused on fabrication and sportswear. ‘I’ve always worn comfortable, baggy clothing and I’m really into sportswear, so it’s perfect,’ she says, discussing her love for menswear design. ‘With menswear, I feel there’s so much that hasn’t been done but you still have those restrictions, which makes it exciting. It’s about how far you can push them with it still being wearable.’
While Randa has come a long way since her days with FAD, she’s grateful for the platform it provided at the start of her progression into the industry. ‘Fashion Futures was the first time I ever had any teaching around pattern-cutting or how clothes are made,’ Randa explains. ‘I had no knowledge prior to that and it was the first time I was able to see a 2D design turn into a 3D product, and have teachers who actually worked in fashion.’
With plans to continue creating work within the field of fashion, she urges those taking part in FAD now to ‘make the most of it and don’t put yourself down in terms of future prospects. FAD is a platform that shouldn’t be taken for granted!’
