SALFORD
FAD goes to Salford!

After four consecutive years of success in London, FAD was able to take the Fashion Futures project this summer to Salford for the first time! The project was run in collaboration with Salford University and Aim Higher Salford who supported it. Fifty students from two schools in the area were chosen to be the pioneers of what we hope will become a yearly event!

The project consisted of a week of intensive workshops aimed at allowing year 10 students experience of what the real fashion world is all about. They had to follow the design process from beginning to end; inspiration brief, design, pattern cutting, sewing skills, and styling and modelling their own outfits! They also had a make-up demonstration by a professional from NARS at Selfridges in Manchester, which was a real eye-opener for many interested in the styling profession. The experience of working alongside fashion professionals and fashion students who acted as volunteers was extremely positive, and all the students were thoroughly motivated.

However, as we have experienced before with these projects, the skills learnt by the students are not just confined to drawing, sewing, etc. The project helps the students in their own personal development, and it is a real insight for them to be able to make the
right decisions for their future. Sophie Pearson, a student from Buile Hill school says: "I have learnt to be more creative and confident and communicate with people more. I have really enjoyed the experience and wish it was never over!"

The culmination of the week's workshop was showcasing the work of the students through an exhibition and catwalk at the Buile Hill Banqueting Suite in Salford - a real treat! During the show, proud parents and teachers were able to admire and appreciate not just the
wonderful creations, but the hard work that had gone into them.

Well done to all the students who took up the challenge of becoming fashion designers for a week! Perhaps some of them will become the designers of the future in the North.
