Stage 2 - Summer School The race was on... five days to create the perfect outfit to wear to the London 2012 Olympics. To design an outfit which was practical, functional and modern, yet which reflected the spirit of Ancient Greece, birthplace of the original Olympic games.
That was the brief facing the 16 students who won places in this years FAD Fashion Futures 2 competition. Only one of the 16 would win the chance to see their outfit manufactured for sale by the George label at ASDA in selected UK stores. So for a week last July at the London College of Fashion, FAD Fashion Futures 2 students frantically hemmed, stitched, tacked and pattern cut designs which had begun life in a sketchbook, into 3-D sportswear outfits, ready for sale in a shop. The results? Certainly eye-catching, highly original: think funky bags decorated with strips of silk the colour of Olympic rings, hoodie tops featuring heat-pressed logos in gold, inspired by the figures seen on Greek vases, or long running-shorts ruched to resemble the way material draped across statues of Ancient Greeks.
"My design - a hoodie top and ruched trousers - was inspired by the way the Ancient Greeks wore their clothes letting the material drape", explained Alice, an FAD Fashion Futures 2 student from Our Ladys High School. Erin from Raines' Foundation School cited "the ropes the Greeks used to tie their togas" as the inspiration for her outfit's drawstring waist. Like many FAD Fashion Futures 2 students, Erin already studies Textiles at A level in school. What added extras did FAD Fashion Futures 2 offer her? "I've taken part in the alternative fashion week. But this was a lot more organised and structured, and the teacher Hazel was fantastic! She managed to help five people at once". Martha, a Textiles student at Our Lady's Convent High School, added: "I'd made clothes before in Textiles classes at school. But FAD was much faster. We got stuck in with making the garment earlier and with less preliminary paperwork". FAD Fashion Futures 2 got the teachers' thumbs up too. Lennox Barton, head of Art at Skinners' Company's School for Girls, came along to FAD Fashion Futures 2 to check on his students' progress. "Fashion Futures gives the students firm transferable skills - how to meet deadlines, come up with a product and go through the journey that exists with all things creative", said Mr Barton. "They realise what we have been talking about in the classroom when they come here, and can learn so much that school doesn't give you time for. FAD Fashion Futures 2 is a model for us". The next step? All the outfits made during FAD Fashion Futures 2 were displayed in a spectacular catwalk show on September 28th 2006 at the Fashion and Textiles Museum Bermondsey. |
