Little Black Dress Family Mosaic 2011
FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct) worked in collaboration with Family Mosaic a housing association which also provides supported accommodation to vulnerable young adults aged between 16 – 25 years old. Fifteen Family Mosaic residents took part in an eight week fashion course from January to March 2011, where they researched, designed and created their own version of the iconic ‘Little Black Dress’.
Based on FAD’s successful Fashion Futures 2 initiative which is now in its 7th year, the Family Mosaic project was developed to provide opportunities for marginalised young people who traditionally find it difficult to access careers in the creative sector. Through FAD they gained a realistic insight into the fashion industry, developing important practical skills and building self-esteem, all with the aim of enhancing their perspectives for the future. This new pilot initiative has already led to apprenticeship opportunities for some of the young people involved and the hope is it will act as a springboard for others to return to full time education or employment.
The project officially drew to a conclusion on 4th May 2011 with a celebration at Rich Mix in East London. The young people involved took to the catwalk to showcase their Little Black Dress creations, alongside live entertainment and a drinks reception for Family Mosaic supporters and residents. On the night limited edition 'Little Black Dress' tote bags, hand printed by the talented young designers in the FAD workshops, were also available to buy.
