Bella Dunne, Fashion Futures 2014
Graduating from BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles: Print, London College of Fashion
Tell us about your graduate collection:
My graduate collection is based around a trip I took to India, travelling to numerous places from North to South India. I divided my research into 4 locations and produced prints accordingly to how I felt in those locations, with particular colours and imagery linked to each. I wanted the collection to be a big reflection of my trip, I linked poems to the collection, so overall it becomes a story.
I am interested in sustainable practice therefore I have sourced many fabrics from charity shops, & dead-stock fabric warehouses, I have also used lots of linen as it is a sustainable fibre that comes from renewable resources. Additionally, I have sourced lampshades from charity shops and upholstered them with my fabric design, trying to balance the production of new and old. This ethos is reflected in my brand name ‘Yesterday Today’.
How was your uni experience?
My work has developed massively since I started, I didn’t realise I was learning so much until I looked back at my first year work. It has been exciting to see an illustrative style develop. I think one of the biggest challenges I have come across in this field of work, is comprehending the amount of time that needs to be invested. You can spend a long time designing, altering, changing colours, proportion etc, but sometimes you just have to limit yourself, especially if you want to make a business out of it.
Did taking part in Fashion Futures help you?
Taking part in FAD was an amazing experience and the first chance I had in seeing a drawing I had created – come to life in a garment. I got to experience every part of the fashion process, from, drawing, pattern cutting, sewing, and even understanding how a catwalk show works.
What are your future plans?
I plan to carry on upholstering lampshades and printing on ceramic tiles, offering them for sale on my website but also approaching independent shops who may be interested in stocking such item.
I am also interested in running wellbeing crafty workshops. I am holding a soap making workshop next month, and I have plans for many more, from simple printmaking to DIY natural beauty products.
