As a member of our Volunteering Scheme Angela mentors not one but two young people from the FAD INTO Fashion programme. Industry mentors are pivotal in helping our beneficiaries achieve their career goals and provide support, encouragement and advice.
We asked Angela about her experience as a mentor which we hope will answer some of your questions on what the role really involves, whether you’re a potential mentor or mentee.
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I am originally from Yorkshire and I had a passion for fashion & design from being a teenager. I studied surface pattern when I left school and decided to pursue fashion design as a career. I studied at what is now the University of Northumbria and moved to London when I completed my degree.
What’s your career background?
I worked for many years as a ladies wear designer then moved onto the business side of things. I was the partner in a business both designing and supplying High Street brands so my knowledge of the business has grown to encompass many aspects of the industry.
Why do you mentor with FAD?
I decided to become a mentor as I felt that I have many years of varied and valuable experience in the industry to share. I remember feeling quite lost once my degree was completed and was out there in the world. It’s a good feeling to be able to help others move forward with their careers.
What does your role as an FAD mentor involve?
My role involves meeting up to catch up on the news on how my mentees are getting on looking for work. I provide support and encouragement as well as helping to assess their cv and portfolio.
How has mentoring benefitted you?
It has been beneficial to me as I enjoy the process of seeing someone get a foot on the ladder to a great career! We all need a shoulder sometimes.
Why do you think the FAD mentorship scheme is important for young people?
I think it is important because it provides one on one support at a time when it is crucial to keep motivated to reach the goal.
