My name is Ekene Osode, but I am known as “KINIUNDE” which in Yoruba means “the lion has come”. I was born in Nigeria but went to school in the United Kingdom.
My art piece talks about the inequity in my country Nigeria and Africa as a whole. My major inspiration came from the fact that I went to Nigeria for the summer and I could not help but see the inequity in Nigeria due to bad governance and corruption. In Nigeria only a minute number of the population are rich, and the majority are extremely poor. What made me put a poor man in clothing for the rich is to show how in Nigeria the rich and the poor are direct neighbors. There is a mansion with a billionaire and next to it there is a shanty with an extremely poor man. I want this project to show more than just a model in pieces of clothing, I want it to speak about the injustice going on in Nigeria.
I have used cotton silk material which is an expensive material and the color gold which is a symbol of royalty and class. I used this particular material and color to depict the rich in Africa. I used a shoe cobbler who is poor as my model to depict the poor people in Africa. I did not add any embroidery or anything extra because I believe that less is more. This project for me was more about what the clothing meant rather than how beautiful or aesthetically pleasing it looked, but at the same time I didn’t forget to make it my signature double collared shirt. I styled the model with a brown palm slipper to give the whole image that touch of extra colors I felt it needed.
