It was a crisp winters morning at the V&A as nearly 100 teenagers from across the capital turned out for the launch of Fashion Futures 2016.
FAD were delighted to welcome a new cohort of 16-19 year olds for a day packed with presentations and research. For many it was their first visit to the iconic V&A, a favourite of iconic fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
The morning kicked off with an introduction to Fashion Futures from FAD project managers Joanna, Maria and Danielle in the magnificent Victorian era lecture theatre.
Some of last year’s finalists gave up their Saturday morning to join us and take part in an informal Q&A panel. They bravely stood on stage taking questions and sharing advice with the new recruits. Topics ranged from how to make the most of research and dealing with confidence issues to overcoming the pain of those early morning workshops. 2015 finalist Georgia spoke about how Fashion Futures has helped her to secure a place at university, while Sophie explained how the ‘opportunities keep coming with FAD’, as she prepares to embark on a week’s design placement at River Island.
FAD Communications Manager Fran introduced this year’s brief – Fusion – inspired by the colour, crafts and culture of the Indian subcontinent, before the young designers headed into the V&A permanent collections to get sketching!
A massive thank you to the V&A for hosting the Fashion Futures launch and to all the volunteers who made it a really inspiring day.
