On Monday the 2015 Fashion Futures cohort took an industry field trip to the HQ of one of the UK’s top high street retailers, River Island.
New FAD team member Joanna Bradford reports.
Women’s Wear Design Controller and long time FAD supporter, Lucy, led the morning at the west London site.
The group were granted access to the design floor, where they were given a guided tour of the various departments, and insight into the day-to-day duties of the design team.
The young people were then led to the ‘Rihanna Room,’ the very space where pop princess Rihanna had designed her exclusive River Island collection in 2013.
Lucy started off the presentation with an in depth look at the design process at River Island, focusing on the creation of their AW2015 collection, from initial trends research to finished product.
This was followed by Lucy and four members of her design team sharing their inspiring career journeys to date. They discussed their routes into the industry, highs and lows, and the lessons they had learnt along the way. The floor was then opened to the young people to ask questions.
Thanks to Lucy and the River Island design team for a fascinating insight into life as a high street designer. Look out for more career advice events coming soon to the FAD blog!
