Last year I went to Nigeria and while there I fell in love with the surroundings, I found so much inspiration from the most mundane things you will witness in the street of Lagos to the hills and valley in Ibadan. Visiting galleries, being around relatives, learning and taking in my culture allowed me to understand where I am from and celebrate it proudly. I titled my graphic piece ‘Find your roots’, which is a collage of motifs I made that was inspired by some of the imagery I came across. I created this to promote black people to embrace their culture unapologetically and, to take control of their narrative by learning about their heritage. My message to the fashion industry is to allow up and coming black designers to thrive without feeling the need for them to conform or assimilate. Furthermore, to acknowledge the contribution black people have made in the industry and give them a fair opportunity to prosper. With not performing tokenism but, rather judging them fairly through their talent and creativity without their race being an obstacle.
