Barcelona entered the 20th century at a time of great economic wealth and social progress, becoming one of the world capitals of Modernism. Because of its location, the light, sea, port, trade and interchange, Barcelona has been a city of inspiration not only to architecture
(with contributions by Gaudi in the early years, hosting of the Olympic Games in 1992, and celebrating the Forum in 2004) but also to culture and design making it perhaps the most innovative and visionary of European cities.

In 2004 Barcelona celebrates the centenary of the birth of the painter Salvador Dali. Born on 11th May 1904 in Figueras, Spain, Dali became a leading member of the Surrealist movement. Relying on dreams as the vocabulary for his paintings, Dali sought to create optical illusions. By applying layer upon layer from the depths of the self, the imagery builds like architecture from the soul. In the 1930s Salvador Dali moved on into a more philosophical state and increasingly related art, science and religion. He drew from classic� in both Northern and Southern European paintings, especially Velazquez and Vermeer. His autobiography The secret life of Salvador Dali and his painting, "The Metamorphosis of Narcissus" completed an illustration of self through symbolism, sharpness and surrealism.

THE TASK

Create 2 harmonious garments to reflect the different sides of the self through the inspiration of Barcelona and Dali and their attributes, arriving at a conclusion to illustrate:

i) Barcelona: With a keen eye look through the porthole to discover the layers of the city and express the strong, explorer side of yourself through the layering of fabrics, paint and
print.

ii) Dali: Examine the techniques and optical illusions used by Dali in the paintings mentioned in the above list to express the soft, dreamy side of yourself through the layering of fabrics, paint and print.

Forthcoming Events
FAD, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in London, is organizing a series of events to support this competition. Further information regarding dates and venue will be available in September. Guided visits to museums will be organised exclusively for students participating in the competition and will include a visit to the collection of Elsa Schiaparelli at the V&A Museum and a visit to see Dali�s paintings at the Tate Modern, including �The Metamorphosis of Narcissus".

THE COMPETITION GUIDELINES

Eligibility
1. Participants must be BA or MA students at fashion college.
2. Each college is allowed up to a maximum of three applications for BA courses and three for the MA courses.

Submissions
Submissions should consist of two illustrations (on either A4 or A3 size) each one showing the front and the back of the two categories and including suggested swatches for each category.

A research sketchbook; and a written interpretation (max. 200 words).

Selection Panel
The panel of judges will represent different sectors of the fashion industry, including fashion designers, journalists, consultants, retailers and artists. The judges� decision is final.

Prizes
First prize: �2,000 plus a work placement.
Two runners-up: �1,000 each plus a work placement.
