One thing we’ve truly enjoyed about Fashion Futures was getting to know each of the young people on an individual basis. Stefano’s been a really positive spirit from the very start, so we thought it would be good to have a quick chat to him about how he’s found FF2017.
17 year old Stefano (Stef) is from Enfield and studies at Winchmore Sixth Form. We managed to borrow him for a brief chat, fitting this into his very busy schedule as he finished making his toile.
Q: How did you first find out about FAD and Fashion Futures?
A: I have three Textiles teachers, and one of my Textiles teachers emailed another one of my Textiles teachers about Fashion Futures and said “show this to the class” so she did, and then I really felt interested in it because of the whole fashion experience, and I thought it would be really helpful and beneficial. I thought “why not sign up?!” and here I am right now.
Q: What’s been the most enjoyable part of the process for you?
A: I liked the designing stage a lot, the mood board was a lot of fun as well but I also really really liked the research day (hyperlink to V&A blog post). I just felt really fun and creative, and it helped me get lots of cool inspiration.
Q: Do you think you can really see the progress you’ve made since the inspiration day at the V&A?
A: Yeah – I feel like I’m a lot more confident in my skills. Sometimes I do have to ask for a bit of help, but I feel like I’m a lot more confident when it comes to sewing and using the industrial machines (compared to just using commercial ones).
Q: What obstacles have you faced along the way?
A: The mystery of the pattern cutting! My dress has lapels on it, and I was trying to figure out how to do the top of it, and it took so long to figure out the pattern, but we managed to do it. I also think as well as that, it was a bit challenging to use the industrial machine, but now I’ve learnt some useful skills and how to slow down so I’m getting there.
Q: What would you say to a student who is 1-2 years younger than you, and thinking of doing Fashion Futures?
A: I think do it. I think it’s very beneficial, and it’s a great opportunity and a fun environment to be in.
Q: Could you summarise your experience in three words?
A: Eventful, fun and fashionable.
Thank you Stef for your time!
